The Challenge

Kapteinsklip and Parkwood Communities Plagued by Hunger

  • Community members are struggling in extreme poverty
  • Children are hungry and regularly go to bed on an empty stomach
  • Gangsterism and unemployment has left the community in despair

The Cape Flats communities of Kapteinsklip and Parkwood are living in hunger and poverty as a result of unemployment, drugs and gangsterism. Almost one-third of Kapteinsklip is made up of children under 16. Most of them only get to eat their first and last meal at the Madrassa and Hifth school, through the Jabulani Feeding and Learning Centre. Covid-19 also worsened the situation as the few people who had some form of income are now left without anything. They are barely getting by, hungry and without hope.

Campaign Activities

Fundraising to Buy and Distribute Food Parcels

  • The Ramadan campaign was marketed via social media and crowdfunding
  • A total of R750 000 was raised through the kindness of donors in SA and USA
  • Jabulani and Sultan Bahu Centre helped distribute the food parcels

The appeal to raise funds ran over a 2-week period and was promoted on social media. We created a LaunchGood crowdfunding page, which grabbed the attention of influencers from abroad as well as South Africa. People from all over the world generously contributed, helping us reach a total of R750 000 in donations.

We consulted with various Ulama, Shuyukh, NPOs and NGOs on correctly spending Zakaah, identifying essential food items, and the logistics of distribution. Heart2Heart partnered with us to manage the funds with transparency and accountability. Jabulani and Sultan Bahu Centre assisted with the distribution of the food parcels to families who are eligible for Zakaah.

Results

1300 Families in Kapteinsklip and Parkwood were fed

  • Every family eligible for Zakaah received a food parcel
  • Each household had food to put on the table for their children
  • Hope was restored among children and community members

The campaign was a success – every family in the entire Kapteinsklip community and every family recorded on Sultan Bahu’s list of the needy have received a food parcel. This brought much-needed relief to the families who struggle every day with a lack of food. The Ramadan Campaign 2021 restored their hope and gave a hand to the people who need it most.

It is through your generosity that this is possible.
